Plus, how to safely enjoy some sunshine and spend a night in these treehouse escapes near L.A.
Time Out No. #01 | Tue 25 August, 2020
Fall in love with L.A. all over again (but, you know, wear a mask while you do it).
These are weird times in L.A., where reopenings—and reclosings—are about as unpredictable as our personal lives right now. Some of you are still staying home as much as possible. And some of you simply can’t anymore. But we want to keep dropping bits of joy and info into your inbox no matter where you stand. Each week, we’ll continue to update you on how you can safely stay connected with all that we love most about L.A., whether that’s out on a patio or from your own couch.

What to do this week
Thu 5–9pm Cocktail Pop-Up at Rooftop Terra
Eataly’s rooftop restaurant is fixing cocktails from a rotating cast of local guest bartenders—and a portion of each sale supports California restaurant and bar industry members in need. Reservations are required.
The best of the rest:
Wed at 7pm Let waves of adolescent angst wash over you as KCRW’s Summer Club kicks off with a Zoom roundtable about albums that saved radio DJs’ and listeners’ teenage years.

Fri 6–8pm Fix yourself a lavender-honey cocktail (recipe included) for Summer Nights at Home, a free, streaming plant life lecture and DJ set from the Natural History Museum.

Fri at 7pm Support the LA Phil and Youth Orchestra Los Angeles during Play Your Part, a streaming concert and workshop that features Brandi Carlile, Gustavo Dudamel, Thomas Wilkins and members of the LA Phil and YOLA.
Want some sunshine?
Here’s how to spend time outside (safely)
right now
Life may be a bit more indoor-bound than previous summers, but you don’t have to abandon the outdoors entirely. We’ve picked out some of our favorite (and safest) ways to add some sunshine and fresh air back into your life. And just a reminder: You need to wear a mask whenever you’re out in public, including all of our picks below.
Watch the sunset along the coast
As the rocks are silhouetted against the orange sky at El Matador, you’ll wonder why you don’t do this more often. Just keep in mind: You can roll out a blanket at many beaches now, but City of Los Angeles-run beaches still only allow active recreation.
Stroll through a botanical garden
Many of L.A.’s major gardens have reopened, as well as some smaller ones. You’ll need a timed reservation at most of them, but we’ve actually found that to be a huge comfort—it’s pretty easy to keep your space from other people and just focus on relaxing.
Stock up on fresh produce
Forget queuing for the grocery store and dodging carts going in the wrong direction down one-way aisles: Take your shopping alfresco at L.A.’s farmers’ markets, which are still operating with some safety modifications in place.
Take your pup to the beach
Among the roughly 70 miles of coastline, there’s only one off-leash dog beach in all of L.A. County. Woof. But we’ve put together some info about that Long Beach favorite plus a few other on-leash beaches.
These notable L.A. restaurants and bars have now permanently closed
Swingers, Trois Mec, L.A.’s original Din Tai Fung location: We’ve seen so many standout restaurants have to shut their doors forever, and that list unfortunately keeps growing. In many cases, Angelenos never even had a chance to enjoy a last meal there, so the least we can do is celebrate how much joy and sustenance these spots brought us.
