Plus, chill out with L.A.'s best ice cream, communal pantries helping Angelenos in need and take in sunset and a movie at the drive-in
Time In No. #14 | Tue 25 August, 2020
Communal pantries and fridges are sprouting up in L.A.
Let’s be honest, we’ve seen better days in L.A. But we’ve also seen unprecedented outpourings of kindness and community support. The latest: A handful of guerrilla aid groups are feeding everyday Angelenos in need through pantries and fridges that have popped up on sidewalks all over the city. Everyone is encouraged to contribute to or take from, no questions asked.
What to do this week
Thu–Sat at 8:30pm Level 8 Drive-In
Take in sunset views and screenings of Mean Girls, My Big Fat Greek Wedding and The Avengers as this drive-in movie theater extends its run atop the Americana’s parking garage.
The best of the rest:
Wed 5–8pm Spend even more quality time with your pup during special dog walking hours at Palos Verdes’ South Coast Botanic Garden.

Thu–Sat at 8:30pm Sip cocktails infused with seaweed or mushrooms at the Eat Your Drink savory cocktail pop-up on Culver City spot Akasha’s patio.

Fri–Sun at 7, 9:30pm; Sat at 4:30pm See fierce favorites from RuPaul’s Drag Race sashay across a stage at ROW DTLA’s south parking lot during Drive ’N Drag.
Hungry?
Make it feel more like summer with L.A.’s best (and most unique) ice cream
It’s not quite a typical summer in L.A. right now, but there’s one tried-and-true method to add a bit of those carefree vibes back: delicious, creamy scoops of ice cream. Whether in a cup or a cone, stuffed in a sandwich or mochi, and kept to the classics or hyper-seasonal flavors—like Le Cafe de la Plage, pictured above—here’s where to find L.A.’s best ice cream.
Mother Moo Creamery
Stop in for root beer floats, milkshakes and classic waffle cones—with three different flavors of chocolate, no less—at this charming Sierra Madre spot.
Mashti Malone’s
Forget the vanilla: This Hollywood stalwart excels in delicately perfumed Persian ice cream in varieties like ginger and rose water or orange blossom with pistachio.
Mikawaya
The mochi ice cream at this Little Tokyo shop, which has family roots that stretch back over a century, packs a rainbow of creamy ice cream into sweet rice dough with flavors like mango, green tea, plum wine and Kona coffee.
Milk
Satisfy all of your guilty pleasures at once at these Fairfax and Silver Like spots, which specialize in cakes, cookies, traditional scoops, and most decadently, ice cream sandwiched between a pair of macarons.
Here’s how to see the NEOWISE comet from L.A.
Outer space is working its magic right when we could most use a pick-me-up. Comet C/2020 F3 NEOWISE (or Comet NEOWISE for short) has been streaking across the sky shortly after sunset. The fuzzy-looking comet makes its closest approach to Earth this week, so here’s what you need to know to spot it.
