Time In No. #10 | Tue 25 August, 2020
Considering a day trip? It’s complicated. Here’s what you need to know.
Now that you can go to the beach, stay at a hotel and dine out at a restaurant, life is starting to look like something sort of close to normal. But travel is anything but normal right now, so we thought we’d break down what you can and can’t do right now in terms of day trips and other regional travel plans—because what you can do and should do aren’t always the same.
What to do this week
Fri–Sun at 8:30pm Street Food Cinema
Outdoor movie season isn’t canceled—it’s just headed to the drive-in. Seasonal fave Street Food Cinema is back with a trio of drive-in screenings in Simi Valley this weekend, and into the summer.
The best of the rest:
Thu at 11am Authors Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman mark 100 years of the ACLU’s fight for our Constitutionally-guaranteed freedoms during a free Zoom conversation with SoCal chapter director Hector Villagra.

Thu–Sun A slew of familiar names in the local summer music fest circuit reassemble for Electric Blockaloo, a virtual performance in Minecraft (yes) that features over 850 (seriously) EDM artists like Deadmau5, Steve Aoki, A-Trak and TOKiMONSTA.

Sat, Sun Annual photography fair Photo L.A. returns for its first online edition, Virtual Collect + Connect, which features artist Q&As and works from over 70 exhibitors.

Some of Malibu’s best (outdoor) restaurants have reopened
As Angelenos gradually feel more comfortable exploring outside of their homes again, heading to the beach feels like a natural first step. So it’s no surprise that in Malibu, nearly all of the beachfront city’s best restaurants have reopened. Given the coastal environs, many of these lean heavily on patios, which is a plus. But if you’re not quite there yet, we’ve included some takeout spots, too.
Malibu Farm
The Malibu Pier farm-to-table favorite has resumed full-service meals on its picturesque patio. Its more casual counterpart farther down the pier plans on reopening soon.
Nobu Malibu
It’s hard to have a romantic meal given the current dine-in modifications, but Nobu’s waterfront setting (and extravagant Japanese fare) should do the trick.
Broad Street Oyster Co.
You can still score one of the city’s best lobster rolls and otherworldly-delicious oysters at this spot, which has temporarily flipped into a drive-through.
Malibu Seafood

Fish and chips, grilled tuna, crab salad, steamed clams: You can’t go wrong with the fresh fare at this takeout window and patio across the street from the beach.
Survey: tell us how you’re feeling about post-lockdown life
As restrictions ease around the world, we want to hear from you about what returning to ‘normal’ looks and feels like right now.

Are you desperate for a pint at your local pub or a meal at your favorite restaurant? Perhaps lockdown has changed the way you think about socializing or exploring your city?
How members of L.A.’s LGBTQ+ community have been staying connected
The last few months have caused many of us to rethink how we stay connected with our communities. And so we celebrate this year’s Pride Month amid that backdrop, where jubilation and celebration have given way to reflection and distanced togetherness. We decided to check in with local LGBTQ+ leaders that we’ve featured in previous Pride Month stories to see how they’ve been staying connected with their communities—and themselves.
Vote now in the Time In Awards
As we start to soak up that California sun again, we thought we’d look back and recognize the Angelenos who’ve made our homebound lives feel more comfortable—the people and places who’ve provided us with bits of joy and brought the things we love to eat, drink and watch directly to our couch. Our editors have compiled a list of worthy nominees, but now we’re leaving it up to you to determine the winners.
