Time Out No. #12 | Thu 20 August, 2020
You've got to try these outdoor fitness classes
If you’ve been longing for an excuse not to work out, this has really been your year. Not only have NYC gyms been closed for the last five months, but just last week, Governor Andrew Cuomo reiterated that they will remain closed for the foreseeable future. (Oh, well! Might as well have this second piece of cake!) For those craving a return to working out in a group setting, however, there’s a promising new trend outdoor fitness classes. We talked to a number of cool small businesses that are providing the new offerings—from cycling and yoga studios to salsa lessons in the middle of the street.

Eat
It's worth waiting outside for Via Carota's delectable svizzerina: a burger-like patty of seared rare beef in a small pool of oil with just two cloves of garlic and sprig of rosemary. You won't miss the bun: It's perfect on its own.
Drink
I'm a firm believer in supporting your favorite local watering holes in times of crisis, so Duplex is where I'm going to get out of the apartment. The outdoor seating area is, as always, a great perch for people-watching.
Do
Our day-by-day list of the best streaming theater is now organized into a convenient whole-week format, and there's plenty of thrilling new stuff to see—such as the live reunion reading on Saturday night of Kristoffer Diaz’s pulse-pounding Pulitzer Prize finalist The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity.

Now, these are some fancy
pizza bagels!
One of the best pizza spots in the city, Paulie Gee’s, is now hosting a pop-up called Edith's during its off-hours on Thursdays through Sundays . The pop-up is inspired by a 1950s Brooklyn Jewish deli and will be serving up bagels (baked in the same wood-fired oven as Paulie Gee’s pizza) alongside shakshuka morning buns, hand-braided challah and, crucially, a weekly pizza bagel menu. The first week, they’ll be offering a prosciutto-and-pickled-onion variation which promises to be a bit more elevated than the ones you microwaved in middle school.
Syndicated launches free
outdoor film screenings
One of our favorite spots to catch a film—and grab a bite—in Brooklyn, Syndicated, has started to once again screen films. The Bushwick venue has painted a 14-foot-wide white screen on its brick facade and is now showing movies outside starting at 8pm every night. (The screenings are free, but seating’s on a first-come, first-served basis.) This weekend, you’ll be able to swing by the brand-new outdoor cinema to catch Moonrise Kingdom, Clueless and Rear Window.

10 perks of wearing a face mask all the time in NYC
One of the most noticeable changes to New York over the last five months has been the proliferation of face masks. And while the newly mandatory accessories do have some downsides, namely uneven face tans, foggy glasses and very sore ears, they also have some perks! (Which are, of course, on top of the main perk: lessening your chance of contracting or spreading a potentially lethal disease.) So the next time you’re about to leave your apartment and feel a slight twinge of annoyance while reaching for that small piece of cloth, just think of these 10 upsides to our new mask-filled lives.
